Save the Bay, Thames Street, "dinosaur"
Today, after a pancake breakfast, we went down to Newport to visit Save the Bay's Exploration Center and Aquarium. Madeline met some seahorses ...
... played with a stuffed octopus ...
... appreciated some fish ...
... admired Spoticus the rare calico lobster ...
... and examined some seashells.
It was another beautiful blue day out ...
... so when we came back to the car ...
... we decided to go no further than Newport's famous Thames Street for a stroll and some lunch.
Back at home, Madeline played, she stalked the cats, she walked around the apartment while holding on with one hand to a single finger ...
... and, at dinner, she started saying "dinosaur."
We were quite excited about this development, especially as she correctly labeled several dinosaurs as exemplars of the word "dinosaur."
But later it turned out that she also identified other random objects as "dinosaur," too. Even if she doesn't know quite what it means, that's a big word for a little sprout. (I also could swear she said "stop sign" repeatedly as she looked out her looking-window, but further testing is needed.)

Olga's, Colt, quasi-steps?
This morning we made it back to Olga's after a significant hiatus. Madeline was glad for her toast.
Mmm.
After brunch we proceeded to Colt State Park in Bristol. The day was beautiful: blue skies, bright sun, and clear, crisp air.
We found a nice spot and explored.
The spot featured, among other things, picnic tables ...
... sticks ...
... monkey balls (apparently actually the fruit of the American sweetgum) like the one Madeline's clutching here ...
... and a big tree ...
... with cool, gnarly roots.
Madeline napped on the way home. She spent the rest of the afternoon playing and looking out her favorite window, pointing out cars driving by and people walking their dogs.
Then this evening before putting her down to bed, we managed to coax a few quasi-steps out of her! She'd either take a single step and then drop to her butt, or she'd take three quick steps before hurtling forward. She was quite pleased with this development (or at least with her parents' enthusiasm); we'll see if it carries over to tomorrow.

Sent home early
Today Madeline got off to a good start, but a scatological explosion got her sent home early. At home, she never showed any symptoms, thank goodness. Instead, we read books ...
... and took an epic nap. Then Madeline played while I prepped dinner:
And then it was bedtime!
Madeline seems to be working hard on language these days. She chatters and chatters and looks at us expectantly -- perhaps she hopes we can understand what she's saying? And she's getting good at imitating sounds. This afternoon we watched cars go by out the window; I'd say, "vroom!" and she'd say, "voom!"
Voom!

Cute pic & new trick
That was the cute pic; the new trick is that Madeline will now hug by request. Hopefully a good hug picture will come soon!

Playing
Today we stayed in our pajamas and played ...
... and played ...
... and played.
Madeline also sang (screamed?) for her supper.
That is all.

Snow day!
Today we got lots of snow. In the morning Madeline bounced around the apartment and then took a nap.
Around midday we headed to Save the Bay HQ to count seals. Madeline wasn't sure what to make of the snow-covered car.
She was even less sure what to make of the snow itself.
The way it stuck to my gloves was pretty neat.
Oooo!
But again there were no seals, and it turns out snow is pretty cold. So we retreated to the warmth of the car. Hooray!
Madeline liked observing the snow from a safe vantage.
Back at home, though, we took her out to walk in the stuff.
She sat down and stuck her hand in it; this, it turns out, was not so fun.
So back inside, where it's warm, we went.
We did venture out again this evening for dinner with HeiĆ°a, Bjorn, and Alexander. Madeline so loves her friend. She wasn't sure, though, about going to bed in a strange place -- she lasted a couple of hours, but after that we had to head for home.

Sippy cups
I missed most of Madeline's morning shoveling snow, but we had some good play time this afternoon.
We romped around on the floor.
And Madeline had her first weekday in ages without a bottle -- according to the daycare folks, she didn't miss a beat taking milk from her sippy cup. She did wonder a bit, though, at the availability of two distinct cups.
