Happy little critter

Madeline has started to identify herself, pointing and saying "Maddy!"

She was a happy little critter this afternoon.

Sleep

Madeline woke up happy despite being tired from last night's festivities.

According to her teacher at daycare, she was so tired that she fell asleep at lunch before finishing her strawberries. This was surprising as she really loves strawberries!

See?

Unfortunately, Madeline is having a difficult time staying asleep tonight. We think her teeth may be bugging her again.

In fact, Summer wrote all of the above while I rocked Madeline back to sleep.  Poor little kiddo.

Pool this afternoon & visitors this evening

This afternoon we set up Madeline's pool in the yard.

She had fun splashing about ...

... and, even when she was out of the pool, being squirted with her toys.

After her pool time came a bath; then she and Summer took turns combing each other's hair.

We took a break for mum-mums.

As we game-planned, Madeline did some coloring.  Then she found this picture from our zoo trip a week ago.  She pointed to Uncle.

She's been asking after Uncle quite a bit today: "Matt? Matt? Matt?"  Alas, he's back in Oregon.

This evening we had a visit from Wisconsin-based friends Mel, Chad, and Aidan.  Madeline and Aidan romped around like the wild little children they are, while the rest of us caught up over sushi and Portuguese wine.  Tomorrow, though, it'll be back to some semblance of routine.

Uncle's last day: Rhode Island landmarks

This morning Madeline was obsessed with this bead-and-wire toy.  She carried it around the apartment with her.

For Uncle's last day, we broke our fast at Modern Diner, a Rhode Island landmark.  Alas, we forgot the camera.  But we remembered the camera when (after a jaunt to Ocean Drive in Newport) we visited another Rhode Island landmark: the grave of horror writer and Providence native H. P. Lovecraft.

Madeline tried to steal some of the trinkets Lovecraft's admirers have left at the grave (a penny, a bell), but we made her put them back.

The day was another hot one, so we took a break before walking home.

By then it was time for Uncle to begin his long journey back to Portland.  Madeline waited by the car ...

... for the necessary posed shots.

But her patience is not unlimited.

She gave Uncle a hug!

... and flashed a broad smile -- she and Uncle had a great time together this visit.

But alas, soon enough we were at the airport (pausing to say hi to long lost cousin Theodore Francis Green) ...

... and Uncle was on his way.

Beach day!

Yesterday I promised a video; here it is:

Today we played hooky and went to the beach!  Specifically, South Shore Beach in Little Compton.  Madeline was a bit confused at first ...

... but she quickly warmed to the experience.

Really, though, warmth wasn't a problem -- today was our third in a row with temperatures in the 90s -- so we spent quite a bit of time in the water.

Madeline loved the ocean.

She really loved it ...

... really, really.

After swimming, she played with rocks for a while, clacking them together ...

... and generally having a grand old time.

When Madeline started seeming sleepy, we took off.  She napped while we drove to Evelyn's for a waterfront seafood feast.

Everyone was happy!

It was a nice day.

Thursday

My computer is down tonight for maintenance, and our main attraction is a video that's currently rotated 90 degrees, and the only video-editing software we have is on my computer, so you'll have to wait for tomorrow -- sorry!

Maybe this will tide you over:

Fathers Day

We kicked off Fathers Day with a visit to Olga's for brunch.

Madeline was enthralled with her cup.

And she tried to entice the birds with a mum mum (but they didn't bite).

When the food was gone, we remained in the garden for a bit and read "Dear Zoo."

Then we went to the zoo!  Madeline admired the giraffes (and said something approximating "giraffe").

The cutest sight of the day was the baby giant anteater riding on its mother's back.  Look closely at this picture and you can just make the two of them out.

We thought Madeline really liked the wallaby, but it turned out she was more interested in a robin in the wallaby's enclosure.

Madeline and Uncle left the Australasia section hand-in-hand.

Then we stopped for a snack.

Madeline loves her Del's!  She's a real Rhode Islander.

And she was really excited by the camels!

Her energy began to boil over, and she escaped Uncle at a run.

But they ended up together again.

After another snack, we left the zoo.  At home, Madeline worked on a project.

Then came a taco dinner, bath, and bedtime.  Good night!

P.S. Apparently this is the 500th post on this blog.  Hard to believe...
